From the sea

The El Toro marine reserve

South of Santa Ponsa, the islet of El Toro concentrates exceptional underwater life. Its reserve, next to Port Adriano, is famed as one of the richest in the region.

Watercolour of El Toro islet and its lighthouse

Protected since 2004, the El Toro reserve is renowned for its barracuda, groupers and the clouds of fish that circle the islet and its lighthouse. Divers travel a long way for it; snorkelling from the yacht, the show starts right at the surface.

We sail there gently along the Calvià coves, anchor as close to the reserve as allowed, then it's mask and snorkel time. On the way back the coast rolls by: coves, cliffs and pines clinging to the rock.

Worth knowing

  • One of the richest marine reserves in the Balearics
  • Barracuda, groupers and shoals of fish
  • Right next to Port Adriano
  • Best from Santa Ponsa or Palma Nova
