The Portals Vells caves
At the south-western tip of the bay of Palma, near the Cala Figuera lighthouse, the Portals Vells peninsula hides three crystal-clear coves and caves steeped in legend.
The most famous, the Cova de la Mare de Déu, shelters a chapel carved into the rock. Sailors are said to have cut it in gratitude for surviving a storm. All around: pale cliffs, pine woods and water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue.
It is the perfect half-day stop from Palma: anchor in the cove, paddleboard to the caves, snorkel along the rock walls. Push on towards the point and the old Cala Figuera lighthouse guards the entrance to the bay.
